Charity officials hope to raise £40,000 from an event which has become an annual Hartlepool attraction.

And if they do, it will mean a big boost for both Hartlepool & District Hospice as well as for local families and sick children.

This year’s Miles for Men run is on July 31 and, for the first time, will be joined by the Walk for Women as well as a free music festival.

Miles for Men promotions manager Kevin Hill said last year’s event raised £30,000 with £20,000 going to Cancer Research and the other £10,000 into the Miles for Men funds to support local causes.

That includes sending families, in which there is a poorly relative, on well-deserved holidays; or towards paying for toys at Christmas for sick children.

But officials are hoping the addition of even more attractions at this year’s event will help to push the total up even further.

I am really hoping that, with the women’s event as well this year, we will be looking to raise more than £40,000

This year, the Miles for Men run will support Hartlepool & District Hospice while Walk for Women will support both the hospice and Miles for Men.

Kevin added: “I am really hoping that, with the women’s event as well this year, we will be looking to raise more than £40,000.”

He praised the hard work of all the charity’s team. He said the team had put in a massive effort to make this year’s big day a success.

He added: “The music is a big factor as well. If people are going to make a day of this, they might be coming to support the music festival but come along to support the run as well.”

Kevin thanked Al Devon from Peng Music for helping put the music line-up together, and compere Les Watts who has been involved since the inauguration of the Miles for Men event.

This year’s event is at The Domes in Seaton Carew and includes the Miles for Men 5k run at 1pm; the 5k Walk for Women at around 1.15pm; and the music festival from 1.30pm to 9pm.

Registration for Walk for Women – and for Miles for Men – is now open online at the website at www.milesformen.co.uk

Entry for either race is £10 for adults, £7.50 for those aged from six to 17, £5 for those aged five and under, and the events are free for anyone aged 65 and over.

All entrants will get a T-shirt as well as a medal.
