Hospital campaign group says stalwart's death is '˜massive loss'

Fighting 4 Hartlepool Hospital said Keith Fisher, who fought to keep and preserve services at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, will be sorely missed and a massive loss.

Keith, died aged 76, on Tuesday after complications while recovering from heart surgery at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

He was the figurehead of the Save Our Hospital campaign, a former councillor and town magistrate.

Glen Hughes, of Fighting 4 Hartlepool Hospital, said: “Keith was a genuine, hard-working man whose heart was always in the right place and who always stood up for the people of this town and tried to make sure they got what they deserved.

“He was a big character and he will be sorely missed.

“I was sorry to hear of his passing. I would say he was like a godfather of the hospital struggle we have had.

“He has always been there from the beginning and will be a massive loss.”

Glen knew Keith since he was a child as they lived in the same street.

Later, he said Keith was always on hand to offer support and advice for the hospital campaign.

As a former Hart ward councillor Keith served on several committees.

He also had a love of fast cars and motorbikes.

He leaves behind son Mike Fisher, 45, granddaughter Rachael, 20, and daughter-in-law Melanie Fisher.

Paying tribute on the Mail’s Facebook page Kathleen Foster said: “Keith was a true gentleman who fought for our hospital and the town. He will never be forgotten. My husband went to school with Keith and they stayed friends.

“Rest in Peace lovely gentleman. Our condolences and prayers to Mike and family. Your dad was a treasure who will never be forgotten.”.

Steven Fluen wrote: “RIP true gentleman pleasure to have known you thinking of your family at this very sad time x.”

Katharine Anne Craggs said: “RIP Keith”.

Former Hartlepool mayor Councillor Paul Beck said: “I have great respect for the work he led to save our hospital. Keith was well respected not just as ward councillor but also as a magistrate for 20 years here in Hartlepool.”

Council leader Coun Christopher Akers-Belcher described Keith as “a larger-than-life character who cared passionately about Hartlepool and its people.”
