REGENERATION chiefs say work to renovate a run- down hotel is progressing well and the new venue is set to open its doors this summer.
Bosses at the NDC Trust, which is the successor to Hartlepool New Deal for Communities (NDC), paid £120,000 for the Melbourne Hotel, in Stockton Road, and has spent the past few months gutting and revamping the site.
Those behind the project say it will be finished to a “high standard” and will be open for business as a social enterprise by the end of this summer.
As well as modernising facilities for business conferences, events and meetings for community use, the rebranded hotel will also have eight en-suite double bedrooms and a revamped restaurant.
NDC Trust administrator, Cheryl Hill, said: “Work is progressing well on the redevelopment of the former Melbourne Hotel and we hope it will be open in either August or early September.
“All of the required planning permission is in place and it will be a complete refurbishment once it opens.
“There will be a range of meeting and conference facilities for local groups to use, eight bedrooms all with en-suite and there will also be a Sunday carvery in the restaurant every week.
“The building was in a pretty bad order when we took it on.”
The NDC Trust is a charitable not-for-profit organisation set up to take forward key initiatives of the original NDC regeneration programme set up 10 years ago.
Hartlepool NDC was one of 39 similar initiatives across the country.
Each was awarded up to £54m of extra Government funding over a 10 year period and that came to an end in March, this year.
NDC Trust development worker Sian Bunn has previously told the Mail that there was a danger it could have been turned into poor quality bedsits that would not benefit the area and that taking it over was too good an opportunity to miss.
Refurbishment work is being carried out by trainees on the construction training scheme, Opening Doors Project, and the NDC Trust will also have an office there.
The family-run Melbourne Hotel closed its doors last summer.
