THERE are plenty of opportunities for winter sports junkies to get their fix within reasonable distance of Hartlepool and East Durham.
The Sunderland Snow Sports Centre, based at Silksworth Sports Centre, gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy snowboarding and skiing on a choice of three slopes.
Harwood Ski Federation, situated north of Middleton in Teesdale, is a ski club run by volunteers from the beginning of November until the end of March every year.
The North Pennines has some of the best winter sport opportunities in England, with well established ski clubs in Weardale, Allenheads and Yad Moss.
Skiing and snowboarding
The Weardale Ski Club facilities are situated on Swinhope fell above Westgate in County Durham.
The Yad Moss Ski Slope in Cumbria, seven miles south-east of Alston, is also popular while the ski club in Allenheads, Northumberland, has three slopes, two of which are suitable for beginners. The two semi-permanent rope tows are in place for the beginning of November until the end of March and operate at weekends whenever there is enough snow for skiing and sometimes during the week.
