Inquest opens into man found on path

THE man found dead near a railway bridge has been named as Vincent Smith.

His body was discovered on land in Seaton Lane, near to the bridge at Seaton Carew railway station, at around 5.30am on Saturday, September 24.

Police at the time said the 27-year-old’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

He was an unemployed former council worker who lived in Fordyce Road, in the Owton Manor area of Hartlepool.

An inquest was opened by Hartlepool Coroner Malcolm Donnelly, but was adjourned for more information to be gathered.

Mr Smith’s mum, Muriel Turner, of Willow Grove, Hartlepool, attended the hearing.

Police had appealed for information after the body was discovered along the tree-lined footpath.

A 35ft-stretch of the walkway was closed off while officers carried out investigations on the Saturday.

Crews from Stranton Fire Station and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service were also called to the incident, but they were not needed.
