A BEAUTY expert who was inspired by her glamorous great-aunt to become involved in the industry has opened her first salon.
Jay Ambler says relative Judy Williams has been one of the biggest reasons for her decision to work in the world of treatments and products.
Judy was a beauty queen in the 1970s and Jay’s affection for her great-aunt is one of the main reasons she is starting in the beauty business.
The Beauty by Jay salon has now been opened by the 25-year-old from Horden above Jessica M hairdressers shop at 105 Stockton Road, Hartlepool.
Jay, of Bramar Terrace, said: “My great-aunty has been an inspiration. She was the one in the family who was bothered about make-up and her appearance.
“From an early age, she taught me a lot about products and different companies. It was a lot of fun.”
Judy, who was from Hartlepool, won a series of titles in the North-East and in other parts of the UK after she moved to Derby.
She passed away aged 56 in 2009 after a battle with ovarian cancer.
Jay’s mum, Deborah Ambler, 50, from Horden, said: “Jay’s great-aunty was always into beauty - she was a beauty queen and Jay looked up to her.
“Jay decided she wanted to go into beauty, so I and all the family have helped her get set up.”
Jay’s cousin, Janine King, 22, from Hartlepool, was on hand to welcome guests attending the salons’ opening day, who enjoyed a free nail polish, cupcakes and chocolates.
Jay says she is fully qualified in all aspects of beauty and offers everything from waxing to spray tanning.
Before launching her own business, Jay worked as a call-centre manager at Fusion in Sunderland for five years.
She said: “I was a manager in a call centre and I hated the job. I wanted to do something that I love.
“I went to college and did my qualifications. I was mobile, but then the shop came up and it was the right time.”
Her salon has two rooms. The first offers a nail bar and waiting area, which is stocked with are hair accessories, scarves and jewelled phone covers. The other is where treatments are carried out.
In the new year, Jay is set to introduce massage and facials to her services.
