“I’m bitterly disappointed and a bit surprised as well. I thought I was in with a great shout.

“Unfortunately, not having played as much cricket as some of the other guys didn’t favour me.

“I’d like to think that I’ve done alright (against Leicestershire yesterday) to show a few people what I can do.

“That’s what I want to do over these next two weeks, prove people wrong and that they’ve made the wrong decision and that I should be playing in the Test match next week.”

Reflecting on Durham’s first day, he added: “There was a little bit of emotion in that first spell. I probably chased it a bit too much.

“Having spoken to a few people at lunchtime, I went back to basics and tried to whack that wicket, which is probably where I’m at my best.

“I got my tail up and wanted the ball to prove a point.

“On another day, I could have had four wickets, but I’ve got two and I’ve got a big job to do (today).

“There are six more wickets up for grabs and we want to get them as fast as we can.

“Rushworth and Rimmington bowled very well in the first session.

“We’re still in this game.”
