SNOW has hit Hartlepool earlier than forecast.
The Met Office had issued an amber weather warning of snow today with light snow expected to fall from around 6pm.
But flakes started to fall at lunchtime.
Temperatures today will not get above freezing after a bright but very cold start.
Forecaster says snow will become persistent and heavy at times, especially later in the evening, with further disruptive snowfall in places.
It will feel very cold with potential for blizzard conditions on high ground.
There is also a chance of some snow overnight although Saturday is set to be mainly cold and cloudy.
Although temperatures will rise slightly to about four degrees, it will feel more like freezing.
Similar temperatures are in store for Sunday with heavy rain replacing snow.
