Jarrow's Sarah McDonald wins at prestigious Diamond League Meeting in Birmingham

Jarrow's Sarah McDonald soared to a magnificent victory in the prestigious Diamond League Meeting at Birmingham at the weekend.

Representing Great Britain ín the senior women’s Internatíonal 1500m, McDonald was ín contention for the lead through the first lap ín 66.62 and 800m ín 2:13.04, with only four left in with a chance into the final lap. Two other Britons, Melissa Courtney and Bobby Clay, and Romania’s Claudia Boboteau were challengíng, but in the sprint for the line, McDonald snatched the gold medal ín 4:07.18 from Courtney ín 4:07.55, with Boboteau third in 4:08.64.

McDonald had taken over three seconds off her previous best time of 4:10.81 for the distance, with another outstanding performance ín a stunning start to her summer outdoor racing.

Former Jarrow star Simon O’Donnell, now a member of Morpeth Harriers, was an impressive winner of the South Shields Park Run on Saturday.

O’Donnell forged clear from the start and opened up a winning margin of over two minutes on Heaton’s Rania Peet with 17:35 for the 5km over the Leas.

Mark Hodgson, from South Shields Harriers, was fourth in 19:43, with Mark Wood sixth in 20:19 and second over 40.

David Shearan, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, was seventh in 20:27, with Shields’ Craig Robe eighth in 21:10 and Ian Stephenson 12th ín 21:39.

Jarrow’s Jonny Evans was 16th in 22:25, with Shields’ Lee Hetherington 19th in 22:35 and second over 45.

Daniel Waugh, aged 11, was 25th in 23:28, with David Roberts 26th in 23:36 and third over 50.

Geoff Newman was 32nd ín 24:30, with Lee Baldwín fourth in 24:31 and Ken Kídger 44th in 25:31 and second over 60.

Jarrow’s Brian Taylor was 48th in 25:38 and fourth over 50, with Neil Reay 52nd in 27:00 and fifth over 50.

Mark Hazell was 66th in 28:24, wih Mark Joice 67th in 28:25 and Jarrow’s Craig Deacon 79th in 2:57.

Shields’ Owen McGarrell was 88th in 35:18 and third over 55.

Susan Jarman, of Chiltern AC, was a prominent ninth overall in the mixed field of 157 wínníng the women’s title with 20:53.

Kim Lancaster, also from the Shields club, was second in 22:25, with Franki Salter, 16, fifth in 22:59.

Jarrow’s Hannah Holman, 14, was sixth in 23:01 with her twin sister, Jessica, seventh in 23:40 and Shields’ Gíllían Nichol ninth ín 25:02.

Susan Burgess was 10th in 25:22, with Claíre Stoker 18th in 26:45 and Lesley Downey 26th ín 28:55 and first over 55.

Míchelle Loftus was 33rd ín 30:36 and first over 50, with Líbbíe Stoker, 14, 49th in 35:14.

Octogenarían Ruth Anderson, 80, was 55th in 37:16, with Amardeep Sudan 58th in 38:31 and second over 55 and Amy Hardy 61st in 41:22.
