That’s how Joy Yates, Editorial Director of Johnston Press North East, described South Tyneside as she welcomed guests to the awards.

She praised the sheer level of talent and community spirit and said judging was getting harder each year because every entrant was deserving of an award.

She told guests: “Have your hankies at the ready because there will be a few tears. There will be lots of laughter and hopefully you will go home feeling this is a great place to live and to work.”

Joy thanked all of the sponsors and said: “Tonight would not be possible if it were not for them.”

Headline sponsor was Siemens and the awards were held in association with The Customs House. Also on board were Port of Tyne, South Tyneside Homes, South Tyneside College; BT South Tyneside, Barbour, David Gray, UK Asbestos Specialists and Harlow Printing Ltd.
