FOR loving Darren and Jan McVitie Valentine’s Day is an extra special occasion to celebrate their romance – it’s also their wedding anniversary.

And today the inseparable couple are celebrating 25 years of marriage.

Darren and Jan walked down the aisle at Hartlepool Register Office on February 14, 1989, before enjoying a reception at the Grand Hotel and an evening do at Hartlepool Rovers Rugby Club, in West View Road.

And the pair will be turning back the years with their family and friends tonight as they have organised a party to be held at the same venue.

Jan, a nursing sister at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, said: “A lot of our friends who were at the wedding will be at the party tonight so that will be really nice.”

Hartlepool couple Jan, 54, and Darren, 46, an operating department practitioner and also England’s former number one table tennis player, met when they both worked at Camerons Hospital, in Hartlepool.

It was Christmas time in 1988 when Darren popped the question and the couple, who have two sons, Luke, 22, and Jake, 20, soon decided to have the special occasion on Valentine’s Day.

Jan added: “Valentine’s Day is nice every year with it falling on the day of our anniversary but this year it’s extra special.”

As well as enjoying a party to celebrate the couple are also going on a short break to the Lake District, where they went on their honeymoon after they tied the knot.

Jan added: “It’s going to be a nice few days of celebrations.”
