The tradition of buying fish and chips on Good Friday was alive and well in Hartlepool.
Verrills on the Headland did a roaring trade as a long queue snaked out the door and all the way down the road.
But hungry customers did not mind the wait as they took in the sea air and warm sunshine.
John and Sue Butler, of Hartlepool, were among the queue. John said: “It is the first time we have come here on a Good Friday. We have come today because we like their fish and chips.”
It was a similar scene at other chippies across town.
