POLICE have launched an investigation after a man was beaten up in his own home.

The 55-year-old also had his house in Southbrooke Avenue, Hartlepool, burgled by the intruders who forced their way into the semi-detached property.

Detectives were made aware of his ordeal when a member of the public rang to say there had been a disturbance at around 1.20pm on Tuesday.

The victim had cuts and bruising to his face but his injuries are not thought to be serious.

Two police officers were stood guard outside the house yesterday as inquiries were made into what had happened.

Police are particularly keen to find a silver Volkswagen Passat.

No arrests have been made in connection with the alleged assault and burglary. A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Officers attended an address where they discovered a male occupant with minor facial injuries who reported to police on arrival that he had been assaulted and a burglary had occurred.

“Officers are asking the public for help in locating a silver Volkswagen Passat estate which was seen in the area at the time as part of their enquiries into the burglary. Inquiries are ongoing at the property.”
