FIREFIGHTERS had to cut a man free from a car after it crashed into a lamp post.

Two crews from Stranton Fire Station, along with one from Stockton and the emergency tender, were called to Marina Way, in Hartlepool, after a Vauxhall Corsa had veered off the road.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The incident happened at around 10.45pm on Friday and the road, near the Middleton Road junction, was closed for around an hour.

Meanwhile, fire crews from Stockton and Billingham tackled a fire in a garage attached to a house in Tunstall Avenue, Billingham, at around 5.50am on Saturday.

An extractor unit was destroyed in the incident and smoke and heat damage was caused to a nearby conservatory.
