A 43-year-old man appeared in court to deny assaulting his MP.

The assault is alleged to have happened in April while Iain Wright was delivering election leaflets.

Judge Peter Armstrong set a trial date of January 18, next year.

Rowbotham, of Oakley Gardens, Hartlepool, was bailed on condition he does not contact any prosecution witnesses, and does not enter the constituency office of Mr Wright in South Road, Hartlepool.
