Man rescued from water by RNLI near Hartlepool

A man was saved from drowning by the RNLI in a dramatic sea rescue near Hartlepool.

Hartlepool's RNLI volunteer crew were called to near Newburn Bridge at about 10.45am after receiving a report that a man was in the water.

After being rescued, the man was taken to the Ferry Road lifeboat station before being taken by ambulance to hospital suffering with hypothermia.

A spokesman for Hartlepool RNLI said: "Hartlepool RNLI volunteer crew were paged at 10.45am on Sunday following a request from Humber Coastguard to recover a person who had entered the water at the Newburn Bridge area of Hartlepool.

"The inshore lifeboat was at the scene of the incident within a few minutes and recovered the casualty from the water, who was suffering from hypothermia.

"The inshore lifeboat returned to the Ferry Road lifeboat station where an awaiting ambulance took the person to hospital."

Hartlepool Lifeboat Operations Manager Chris Hornsey said: "A fast response from our volunteer crew paid off by rescuing the person who was obviously suffering from the effects of the cold water.

"This is something we train for and I can only say well done to everyone involved."
