Police, firefighters and ambulance crews attended Jackson's Wharf in the town today after a man's body was found.
Police received the call at 10.45am, following reports of a body in the water.
The death is not being treated as suspicious - but a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police stressed that this incident is not linked to a missing person appeal for Graham McInness, of Stockton.
Andy, watch manager on duty at Stranton Fire Station, confirmed that one appliance from Hartlepool, two appliances from Thornaby and a water rescue boat from Thornaby responded to the call.
He said: "We were taking direction from the police in this case.
"The fire service brought a boat into the jetty and we recovered the body from the water."
The victim was described as "elderly".
