Marina blueprint unveiled in the 80s

Thirty four years ago, a blueprint was revealed for a Hartlepool project which would eventually change the face of the town.

In 1983, the drawings and plans for a Hartlepool Marina were unveiled complete with a yachting lock, housing, pavilion, bar and restaurant.

They were presented to the Government Minister Tom King with a message from campaigners in Hartlepool.

He was told that this was an example of what could be done if private investors came together with the Government and local authorities to transform the docks area.

Hartlepool firm Cecil Yuill came up with the blueprint and managing director Ron Norman pointed out what it would need for the project to succeed.

He said Government cash aid would be required for the docks development to get off the ground.

If it happened, he said, it would lead to very high quality accommodation with wrought-iron balconies looking over the harbour.

He also envisaged a number of starter homes for the younger buyer.

At the centre of the development would be a sort of mini shopping centre with shops associated with the yachting industry.

And to complete the project, there would be a large restaurant with a tower which would be constructed near the site of HMS Warrior.

Mr Norman said at the time: “This is a very exciting project and as such it needs a very bold approach. You can’t do things by halves on something like this.”
