Matthew Bates keen to repay Hartlepool United faith

It had been widely expected Bates would step aside at the end of the season, despite guiding the club to National League safety.

But, having been impressed not only by his results, but also by his detailed plan at interview, Bates was handed the Pools reins by director of football Craig Hignett and owners Raj Singh and Jeff Stelling.

And having been shown that trust, Bates is keen to prove his worth in what is his first full-time managerial gig, at the tender age of just 31.

“We had conversations after Tranmere and it was fairly quick,” he said of being given the job permanently.

“It just took time to sort out the contracts really.

“It dragged on a bit, but was sorted fairly soon after that game.

“It was no secret I wanted the job, I said at the time I did all I could.

“I had no inclination which way it would go.

“The club has shown its belief in me and I need to repay that faith now.”

Bates is now keen to give Poolies something to shout about on the park, after a season of turmoil off it.

“We have spoken about stability and things behind the scenes are being cleared up,” he revealed.

“My remit is to get a squad out on the pitch which the fans can be proud of.”
