Mayor to host Burns Night celebration to help fill the charity coffers

A RALLYING call has been made to the people of Hartlepool to help boost the coffers of the Mayor’s charity.

Mayor of Hartlepool, Coun Stephen Akers-Belcher will staging a Burns Night Celebration on Saturday, January 31, next year at the Staincliffe Hotel in Seaton Carew.

Guests will be treated to a three course dinner of Scotch broth, haggis with neeps and tatties then ice cream, fruit coulis and shortbread. Plus there will be a dram of whisky for the toast

Entertainment will include a tribute to the life of poet Robert Burns and a Scottish quiz with prizes.

Masters of Ceremonies at the event – which is sponsored by the Staincliffe Hotel – will once again be Scottish pipers Kevin Reilly and Frank Bonner, who have over 40 years’ experience of running Burns Night suppers and hosted last year’s event.

Dress code is smart suit or kilt, with people being asked to wear something tartan.

Fundraising for the Mayor’s charity, which this year is supporting the RNLI, Hartlepool Hospice, the Great North Air Ambulance and Miles for Men, continues on March 21 with a charity night at Owton Manor Social Club.

The event will feature adult humour and songs by Andy McGowan who will be performing his own 30-minute tribute to TV’s Mrs Brown.

Coun Akers-Belcher said: “These two events are very different but they both have two things in common – they’ll be lots fun and they’re in aid of four excellent charities which do so much to help local people.

“Whether you treat yourself or a family member or friend, these are two terrific evenings to look forward to.”

Tickets for the Burns Night are priced £20. Tickets for the comedy night are £10. Both are available now.
