There were chants for the club’s head coach to be dismissed during Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Fans chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning” and “Steve McClaren, you’re taking us down”.

The result left the club second-bottom of the Premier League and a point adrift of safety ahead of next Monday night’s game at leaders Leicester City.

Supporters are clamouring for a managerial change given the team’s dire run of form this season.

And out-of-work managers David Moyes, Brendan Rodgers and Nigel Pearson have all been linked with the post, while Harry Redknapp – who once turned down the United job – has been mooted as a short-term firefighter.

However, the club is yet to make a final decision on McClaren’s future.

High-level discussions behind the scenes will continue today, and managing director Lee Charnley could convene a board meeting.

McClaren, himself on the board, vowed to fight on after the Bournemouth result.

Asked if he would quit, the 54-year-old said: “No way. That’s for other people to decide. I don’t do that.

“I have enough experience. I’ve been through this, with chants like there has been, quite a few times. That’s the perils of being a manager, and especially of this team, this season.”

Charnley and owner Mike Ashley – who was not at the game – chose not to make an immediate decision on the future of McClaren in the aftermath of the club’s latest defeat.

And McClaren, hopeful he will still be in charge for the Leicester game, is now waiting to learn his fate.
