Members of the Hartlepool Special Needs Support group are planning their own sponsored fancy dress stroll and they would love more people to come and join them.

On Sunday, July 24, they will set off from Hartlepool Marina dressed as everyone from Superman to Batman and Robin.

Their aim is to walk one kilometre and the money they raise will go towards the support group’s activities such as its summer scheme.

Jamie Allison, from the HSNSG Core Fundraising Group, explained how group members were determined to play their part.

He said: “It all came about because some of the members saw us doing the Great North Run and wanted to do a sponsored walk.

“I suggested we do it in fancy dress and prove that you do not have to be able bodied to be a superhero.”

The walk will start at 2pm from the Marina and Jamie added: “A lot of our members have mobility issues so this will be a massive challenge for them.”

He urged people across Hartlepool to give their support. “People are welcome to come along and watch and even participate if they want by emailing [email protected] to pre register. All entrants will get a certificate and medal on completion.” Entry is £5 and around 25 people have so far signed up. “We have got members of our group and their families and they are coming as Superman, Batman, Robin and Superwoman and other characters,” said Jamie.

“This is the first one that we have done and it is our hope that it will become an annual event.”

The group has its own resource centre in Park Road. The activities it runs includes a Children’s Fun Club, youth club, The Get Together Club, the drama arm of the support group Constellation, and The Friends Fun Club.
