The Hesleden student has been announced as the student of the year at the Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) degree show in Hartlepool.

She told how the honour came after she put in extra hours to complete her final major project which was all about the ballet The Prince of the Pagodas.

She interpreted the work and came up with her own costume adaptation of the ballet which an Emperor must decide which of his two daughters should inherit the throne.

Embroidery and silk flowers were used for embellishments, and Hayley also added techniques of carving and sculpting foam and moulding latex.

She admitted she had “put in extra hours” to design the layout and to do marketing.

Hayley said the project had involved “challenges as a team including task distribution, as well as having to create practical solutions to manufacture my designs.”

But as the end product came together, Hayley admitted: “I was excited to see how the show looks. Seeing it finally set up and how all the years’ work can be presented is great, as well as allowing friends and family to view my work.”

After graduation, the 21-year-old said she wanted to build up her portfolio and added: “I am looking to develop my career in costume and embroidery.”

But she reflected on a great time at the college and said: “I have had the ability to expand my knowledge of costume design and construction techniques whilst being able to participate in a range of creative projects including some live projects.”

The annual degree show features the work of students from ten degree courses.
