Men’s fitness on agenda

MEN have the chance to get fitter through a new council scheme.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s sports development team is running the Men’s Begin 2 Gym Package at the town’s Mill House Leisure Centre in Raby Road.

Bosses say it is just the ticket to get you into better shape and it comes after the Mail revealed obesity cost the NHS in Hartlepool £30.4m last year.

Figures showed a third of the adult population in Hartlepool was classed as obese and one in three youngsters in Hartlepool were classed as either obese or overweight by the time they reached the age of 11.

The scheme costs £20 – saving over £27 on normal prices – and includes:

l An induction by a qualified instructor, to show you around the gym and draw up your own personal training programme;

l An Active Card, giving discounts on a range of sports and fitness activities and classes in Hartlepool;

l A computerised Techno Key, which allows you to use Mill House’s wide range of gym equipment and records your progress;

l Six free gym sessions at any time during the gym’s normal opening hours (subsequent sessions cost just £3.50 each).

Rachael Pringle, the council’s sports development officer, said: “If you’ve never been to a gym before but want to give it a try, or if it has been a while since you’ve been to a gym, this is the course for you.

“It’s a great way to get a bit fitter in time for Christmas and the new year and you’ll be following your own personal training programme at a pace to suit you.”
