Micky Early – Coach of the Year

EVER-MODEST Micky may be the winner of this award, but he made sure praise went to his behind-the-scenes colleagues.

It’s thanks to Micky that sailing is gaining prominence in Hartlepool.

It is a focus sport for Hartlepool Borough Council and few people are doing more to put it in the spotlight than this man.

But after picking up the trophy, he said: “This is all down to a big team of people.

“Yes, it is great to be singled out but I have got to give massive thanks to the people in the background who help me.”

Judges praised him for a commitment to sailing which sees him at the Tees and Hartlepool Yacht Club at all hours, to ensure that people of all ages get to enjoy the sport.

One of the main ways he has done this is through the Olympic Legacy Programme that the club signed up to be part of, leading up to the Olympics 2012.

This was a programme in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council to grow the sport locally and increase access to all target groups.

The programme has gone from strength to strength thanks to Micky’s commitment and also the mentorship he shows to other coaches and volunteers.

He said: “We have a list of active members of people aged from seven to 80 and we shall continue to offer sailing to anyone that wants to come along.”
