Middlesbrough clinch the signing of in-demand Southampton defender
Middlesbrough have clinched the loan signing of Southampton defender Sam McQueen.
The 23-year-old was at Rockliffe on Thursday morning to complete the formalities of his move as he joins Boro on a season-long loan.
A product of the Southampton academy system, McQueen is a left-sided player who is most comfortable playing as full-back but can push further forward if required.
He has already racked up over 50 appearances for the Saints - with his debut coming at the San Siro in a Europa League clash with Inter Milan.
The full-back has also spent time on loan with Southend United, but will now look to test himself in the Championship as Boro look to mount an assault for the title.
Bristol City and Leeds have previously been linked with a move for the Southampton man - while Boro's interest was rumoured as early as June.
McQueen could be in line to make his debut for Tony Pulis's side tomorrow evening as they make the trip to table toppers Leeds.
And Pulis is looking forward to an entertaining clash between the Championship's two early pace-setters - as Boro prepare to take on a 'great' club.
"Elland Road is a fabulous stadium to go to and Leeds have fabulous supporters. It’s a great football club," said Pulis, speaking at his pre-match press conference.
"I was born in the 50s so I have memories of an era when Leeds were one of the greatest teams in the world.
"In fact, in the early 70s my dad took me to see them play at Wolverhampton.
"And now they have a top manager, they have had a good start and we are looking forward to another big test.
"It will be under the lights and we are really looking forward to it. It could be a fabulous game."
