A VAN driver had to be cut free from his vehicle and taken to hospital after he was involved in a collision.

Police and fire crews were called to Tenth Street, in Blackhall Colliery, at 3.50pm on Friday after reports of two vans – a Citroen and a Mercedes – colliding in the street.

Crews from Peterlee Fire Station had to cut one man free and he was then taken to the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, for treatment for neck and back injuries.

The other driver was not injured but both vans were badly damaged.

Tenth Street was closed for around an hour to allow emergency services to carry out their investigations.
