A QUICK-THINKING neighbour smashed a window to get into a Hartlepool home to alert a family of three.
The blaze broke out in a caravan in the garden of a home in Otterpool Close, spreading to the shed and to the back door and window of the house.
Contractors working in the street initially noticed the fire, which destroyed the caravan, shed and most of the fence, and phoned emergency services.
A spokesman from Stranton Fire Station said the quick-thinking neighbour wasted no time in getting into the property to alert the three people inside who were unaware of the flames.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze, which broke out at around 10am today.
The spokesman said: “The people were out of the property when we got there. By the sounds of it they had quite a lucky escape.”
He said fire chiefs and police are currently investigating the cause of the blaze.
