New lifeguard course

BUDDING lifeguards can find out more about what it takes thanks to a new course.

Begin 2 Lifeguard is a six-week programme run by Hartlepool Council’s sport and physical activity team.

It is due to start on Tuesday, June 19, between 4.30pm-5.30pm at Mill House Leisure Centre, in Raby Road.

Liam Lewis, the council’s assistant sport and physical activity officer, said: “Being a lifeguard is a very demanding role which requires a high level of fitness, a good swimming technique and the ability to keep a cool head in an emergency.

“This course is aimed at giving people an insight into what is expected of a lifeguard, what the training involves and which qualifications are required.”

The water-based sessions include rescuing casualties, towing, using rescue aids and timed swims.

The Begin 2 Lifeguard course costs a total of £10 per person and places must be booked in advance.
