RESIDENTS of Hartlepool are being urged to nominate people who they think deserve the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch ahead of next year’s London games.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is seeking inspirational individuals to carry the torch on an 8,000 mile journey across the UK next summer.
The 70-day Olympic Torch Relay will leave Land’s End on May 19 and arrive at the Olympic Stadium on July 27.
Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond said: “The fact that the UK is hosting the Olympic Games is something that we should all be proud of. But wouldn’t it be fantastic if someone from our own town was selected to carry the torch.
“So if you know of someone inspirational – and remember more than half of torchbearers are expected to be young people aged between 12 and 24 – make sure you get your nomination in ahead of the June 29 deadline.”
Around 90 per cent of the 8,000 torchbearer places are being made available to the public and nominations can be made by going to www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay
The prototype of London 2012 Olympic Torch has been unveiled and stands 31ins-high, weighs just less than 2lb and is triangular in shape.
