North East rail boost

RAIL passengers are set to gain as part of a £9m Government boost.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening was today expeceted to outline details of what is being billed as the biggest programme of investment in the railways since the Victorian era.

The nationwide plan, covering the period 2014 to 2019, will see upgrades including to the East Coast Main Line from London to Newcastle.

Rail campaigners welcomed the prospect of increased investment in the network, but warned against massive fare hikes to pay for it.
