A lottery millionaire who scooped more than £10million on the lottery initially thought he had been “lucky” enough to win £10,000.

John Bowman, from Forfar, checked his numbers from Saturday night’s Lotto draw the following morning.

But it was not until he showed a friend his ticket he realised he had won a lot more than he previously thought.

Speaking at an event organised by operators Camelot today, Bowman said the first thing he did was phone his daughters Lisa, 28, and Emma, 26, to break the good news.

“I told them to sit down because I had some news for them - they didn’t believe me at first,” he said.

He then went to his local pub to celebrate his win.

“My first drink as a millionaire was still a pint of beer,” he added.

The 59-yearold said he plans to spend some of his £10,317,199 winnings on a place in the sun.

He said: “I want to buy a home abroad, somewhere with plenty of sun, and I also like travelling so I will be looking at holidays in Europe.

“I enjoy Formula 1, too, so I think a trip to the Monaco Grand Prix will be on the cards.

“But the first thing I will do with the money is look after my daughters and I will also be sharing some of my good fortune with family and friends.”

He also revealed he would not be returning to work at local firm Ramsay Ladders.

“They are a lovely local family business. I’ve been in touch and they are all delighted for me, but I won’t be keeping on my job,” he said.

“The win also means I’ll have plenty of time to play more golf and bowls.”

Mr Bowman has played five lines of the same numbers every week since the lottery launched more than 20 years ago, but has not had any big wins until now.

His £10million win makes him the latest in a list of successful Scottish winners.

Earlier this year, married couple David and Carol Martin, from Hawick in the Scottish Borders, claimed half of a historic £66million lottery jackpot, while in 2011, Colin and Chris Weir, from Largs in North Ayrshire, scooped a £161,653,000 EuroMillions jackpot, the biggest in UK history.
