But Hartlepool Borough Council planning committee rejected a retrospective application at its meeting last Wednesday, stating the door was ‘out of keeping’ with the Church Street Conservation Area. The council could now impose an enforcement notice and order the firm to remove the new door and replace it.

Readers have given their reaction to the story on our Facebook page.

Darren Robson wrote: "There are no plastic doors in that street and it is out of character unfortunately."

Dave Ryan commented: "If it fills a hole in a wall and stops a bit of draft, it's a good door."

Margaret Russell said: "What difference does it make, there is nothing good about Church Street anyway!!!"

Vicky Tyzack wrote: "It's a door ? Who cares."

Jeanette Purnell commented: "I've got a hard wood door because I live in a conservation area, it's drafty and swells in the winter so that I can't open it - at some point common sense has to prevail and just accept that modern alternatives are more efficient."

Jude Macintosh said: "Paint the wood and it won't be so bad. It's a bit much calling it crude."

Chris Laybourn said: "Is this article serious or a joke? I can't believe our council are wasting time on a door after all the money they have wasted in the past!!!"

Rob Wilkinson stated: "Out of character? With this town? I don’t even know what that means anymore."

Chris Reay said: "Door looks OK to me."
