Not only will people be able to listen to the athlete speak at The Diamond and Pearl Ball, they will also have the chance to win a real diamond in the raffle.

Lisa Wilson, business development officer at Families First, said: “Stephen is an inspirational athlete and has overcome numerous challenges with a positive outlook.

“He’s an excellent public speaker and we’re thrilled he has agreed to open our event.

“As it’s our 30th anniversary we are pulling out all the stops to make sure it’s a night to remember.”

Set up three decades ago, Families First North East is an award-winning charity, which has its base in Hartlepool.

It supports children and young people with additional needs, as well as their families.

The Diamond and Pearl Ball will take place at Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield, on September 29.

Stephen, a three-time gold-winning Paralympian, is the charity’s patron and will have the honour of opening the ball.

Lisa said it is sure to be a good night with people having the chance to win a diamond on the night from Mark Lloyd Goldsmith, alongside other amazing prizes including overnight stays from Charity Escapes.

She said: “We’re enormously proud of the impact Families First has in the town, for us to continue this life line work we need the support of our local community.

“When you buy a ticket for this event you’re showing you also care about helping children and young people with additional needs.”

Tickets are on sale now for £45, which includes a three-course dinner and live entertainment from the Hip Operation band.
