Passer-by alerts fire brigade to Hartlepool house fire

Firefighters tackled a blaze in Hartlepool after being called by passer-by who heard the fire alarm in side a property.

An appliance from Stranton fire station attended the unoccupied, but fully furnished, property on South Road after a member of the public raised the alarm at 4am.

The fire, which was confined to the basement, was extinguished using two breathing apparatus and a hose reel.

The basement was left damaged by fire, while the ground floor of the property was damaged by smoke.

Crews remained on the scene for 45 minutes.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
