Pensioner who died in bungalow fire named by police

POLICE have confirmed the identity of a pensioner who died in a kitchen blaze.

Monica Freeborn, 66, died after a fire broke out at her bungalow in Sycamore Crescent, Trimdon Station.

Police and fire chiefs had launched a joint investigation following the tragedy, which saw firefighters called to the bungalow at around 9pm on Friday.

Despite efforts, paramedics pronounced Ms Freeborn dead at the scene.

A Durham Police spokeswoman said: “Inquiries are ongoing.

“However, at this stage, the fire is not thought to have been suspicious.”

The fire is said to have been contained to the kitchen with “minimal damage” caused to the house.

Two crews from Peterlee Fire Station and one from Wheatley Hill had been sent to deal with the incident.
