5. Another export
While Andy Capp the Movie has still to be made, the famous cartoon layabout, created by Hartlepool artist Reg Smythe, had an unsuccessful TV series made about him in the 1980s before making a cameo appearance in American cartoon series Family Guy.
6. Yet another export
The Angel of the North was made in Hartlepool in 1998 by family firm Hartlepool Steel Fabrications at its Graythorp yard before being shipped up the A689 and A1 in pieces to its Gateshead home.

7. Nearly an import
An scaly ant-eater native to Tanzania was offered to Hartlepool in 1999 as a token of the town's growing links with the African country's Kilimatinde area. Animal experts decided that Eric the Pangolin might not survive in our colder climate.
8. Sticking with animals
While the idea that the town executed a monkey during the Napoleonic Wars is largely treated as myth, Stuart Drummond, right, Hartlepool United's former monkey mascot, was indeed elected as Mayor of Hartlepool in 2002 before immediately ditching his furry suit.
