Police praise vast majority of Hartlepool United fans despite 'disappointing' pitch invasion
Police have praised the vast majority of Hartlepool United fans for their behaviour at Sunday’s play-off final after dealing with only a small number of incidents.
Around 3,100 Pools supporters attended the match at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate Stadium, which ended in euphoric scenes as Pools were promoted after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win.
Avon and Somerset Police said just three people were ejected from the Hartlepool section during the game with inquiries continuing into the incidents. One person from the Torquay end was thrown out.
The force said: “While it was disappointing to see supporters ignore instructions not to go on the pitch at the end of the game, we're grateful to the majority of fans who were well-behaved and engaged with police both before and after the match."
They are also investigating an alleged public order offence and assault on a police officer outside the ground although it is not known whether Hartlepool followers were involved or not.
