AN investigation has been launched after pigeons were killed in an allotment fire.
Crews from Peterlee Fire Station were called to an allotment site off Quilstyle Road, in Wheatley Hill, after reports of a pigeon cree on fire.
Two out of the three doors to the cree were opened by an allotment holder on the site to release some of the birds, but fire chiefs say some were killed.
It is not known how many birds perished in the fire, the cause of which is now under investigation.
Firefighters were called at 8.50pm on Monday night.
