Plea to tell police about drink and drug drivers and help save lives

People are being urged to provide information about drink and drug drivers a the national summer drink and drug drive campaign starts today.

The campaign will run throughout the month and will see Cleveland and Durham Police carrying out random checks on drivers.

Police aim to raise awareness of the dangers of driving while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, which is one of the four main causes of fatal collisions on UK roads.

Acting Inspector Harry Simpson, from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, said: “The aim of the summer campaign is to remind all drivers of the risks that they take if they get behind the wheel after having an alcoholic drink or taking drugs.

“We would urge people not to take the risk of seriously injuring themselves or other people, or worse, by being tempted to have an alcoholic drink and driving.

“There are people out there that have information on drink drivers. We would strongly urge those people to come forward with that information. What if they had a collision on the way home and seriously injured or killed someone? How would you feel?

During the campaign last summer, 66 people were found to have tested positive for driving while under the influence of alcohol and 24 people were found to be driving under the influence of drugs.
