POLICE have failed in a bit to change the kick-off time for next month’s Wear-Tyne derby.
Northumbria Police wanted the clash rearranged from its scheduled 4pm start time on Sunday, April 5, to an earlier one.
However, the request has been knocked back by the Premier League and the game will kick-off at 4pm as planned.
The hotly anticipated encounter will also be screened on Sky Sports.
Chief superintendent Steve Neill, match commander for the Wear-Tyne derby, said: “Public safety and the welfare of fans is our absolute priority when it comes to policing football matches.
“With this in mind, we made representations to have the 4pm kick off time moved forward.
“However, the final decision on the match fixture rests with the Premier League and they have decided on 4pm on Sunday April 5.
“We are very experienced in policing events of this nature and we are working with our partners, both clubs and both sets of supporters on planning for the match.”
