A BODY has been discovered close to a community centre in Hartlepool.

It is understood police are investigating whether or not the body is that of missing Hartlepool dad Darren Waller, 36, who vanished on January 9.

Remains were found on an area of open land on the town’s Central Estate just after 7pm last night.

A cordon was placed around an area of open land behind The Phoenix Centre in Hindpool Close.

Officers in white suits set up a tent around a patch of land underneath the railway line off Ainderby Walk.

It is believed the discovery was made by a dog walker.

It is not yet known if the body is of a man or a woman, or the age.

Police have confirmed it is not related to yesterday’s incident in which a 58-year-old town man was killed in an explosion in his car.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Just after 7pm police were called to Ainderby Walk, Hartlepool, in the Central Estate, where remains of a body has been found.

“Inquiries are on going to establish the identity of the body.”

Stunned residents went out into the street and watched the drama unfold from their house windows.

A generator was provided by Stranton Fire Station as police worked into the night.
