Police searching for missing teacher alerted after discovery of body

POLICE searching for missing teacher Mark Bushnell have found a body on the beach close to where he was last seen.

Officers were called to the beach at Blackhall Rocks after the grim discovery was made by a member of the public.

A formal identification has yet to be carried out but Mr Bushnell’s family have been informed of the find.

The 50-year-old has been missing for almost two weeks since his car was found abandoned in Blackhall on Monday, March 10.

Mr Bushnell, a deputy headteacher at Durham School and former teacher at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, was last seen at lunchtime on Sunday, March 9. His wife, Joanna, reported him missing that evening after he had been away from home for several hours and she couldn’t contact him.

Specialist teams, assisted by Cleveland Marine Unit and the Police Air Support Unit, carried out land, sea and air searches after Mr Bushnell was reported missing.

A Durham Police spokeswoman said: “Police searching for missing Durham teacher Mark Bushnell have been alerted by a to a report of a body on the beach close to where Mr Bushnell was last seen.

“The report came from a member of the public and police are currently at the scene close to Blackhall Rocks in Peterlee.”
