Safe and pedestrian-friendly connections from the town centre to the marina will play a key part in Hartlepool's £25 million plans to improve the area, according to council chiefs.

Connectivity improvements to better link the marina, town centre and railway station has been listed as one of five main projects to benefit from the Government funding announced earlier this week.

Cllr Shane Moore, Hartlepool Borough Council leader, said the plans include more connectivity in and around the marina itself, as well links to the key town sites.

The Independent Union representative said during Friday’s visit from Government minister Robert Jenrick: “We often forget that the marina is a residential area for a lot of people living in the marina and the public open spaces and the footpaths down there are horrific.

“It’s about connecting all of the areas of the marina together, and then making sure those connections are then made to the second platform to the train station, ready for that reopening, and over to Church Street and the town centre as well.

“All of the connections from the town centre to the marina are road orientated and it’s about making it safe and friendly for pedestrians to be able to access that as well.”

Cllr Moore added he was delighted the Government backed the town’s bid for the full £25million they applied for, noting the projects also “invest in the people” of Hartlepool.

Other plans for the funding include the re-imagining of Middleton Grange Shopping Centre to create “a clearly-defined mixed heart for the town centre”.

Proposals also include transforming the Wesley Chapel site and developing health and civil engineering training institutes.
