Pools' players are the '˜envy' of the National League - Michael Woods

Michael Woods believes Hartlepool United's squad is the envy of the National League.

But, without the results to back it up, it’s all just hot air.

Woods believes Pools’ fifth tier rivals will look at the players the club have left out or on the bench on match days and turn green.

That doesn’t get you promoted or pick up the silverware, though.
And Woods knows Pools have to keep riding the crest of a wave, following two wins on the bounce, when one of the pre-season favourites for promotion head to the Super 6 Stadium this afternoon.

Ahead of the Chesterfield clash, the midfielder said: “We have a squad people will envy at this level.

“Credit to people behind the scenes - they have added some real quality.

“Saying that is one thing but delivering on the pitch is another thing altogether.

“People might start to take notice if we go and beat Chesterfield. They are one of the fancied teams at this level.

“To beat them would be a statement - it would also be three in three.

“People will start to then see us a threat.”

Woods has been at Pools through the highs and the lows. And to him this really feels like it could be the start of something under manager Matthew Bates and director of football Craig Hignett.

“The standards at this club, top to bottom, have been lifted,” he said.

“The lads know they have a battle on to get the shirt.

“If you have the shirt on your back you need to keep it.

“This has to be a platform for us.

“We have spoken about the home form - we know we need to win games at our place to do well this season.”
