James spent the final three months of last season back at Victoria Park after making 19 League Two starts during a loan spell, following an ill-feted £500,000 move to Peterborough in the summer of 2014.

Pools had made enquiries about re-signing James, who was placed on the transfer list by Peterborough at the end of the season.

But the 21-year-old has agreed a move to League One outfit Bristol Rovers, where he will link up with manager and ex-Pools midfielder Darrell Clarke.

“I’m very excited to be here and can’t wait to get started," said James.

"The move came around really quickly but as soon as I heard there was interest from Bristol Rovers this is where I want to be so I’m glad it’s all done."
