AN investigation has been launched after a fire in the first floor of an empty house.

Firefighters from Stranton and Billingham stations were called to the property in Borrowdale Street after neighbours spotted the fire.

The fire officers spent around 90 minutes at the scene putting the fire out although the back bedroom on the first floor of the house was completely destroyed.

A spokesman for Cleveland Fire Brigade said it wasn’t yet clear how the fire was started.

Scene of crime officers attended the property on Saturday after the fire at around 11.30pm on Friday and an investigation is now taking place to discover the cause.

Meanwhile, firefighters from Stranton station were also called after a fire in an alley near to Cobden Street, in the town.

One appliance from the station attended at around 10.30pm on Friday.
