A PROBE is underway after a wheelie bin fire spread to a house.

Two fire engines dashed to the fire in the back yard of an end terraced house in West View Road, Hartlepool, at around 6pm on Saturday.

No-one was in the house at the time and the brigade quickly put out the fire which had spread to the back door and a window.

One crew providing cover at Stranton Station in Hartlepool during the 2pm-2am fire strike by Fire Brigade Union members attended the incident along with one from Stockton.

The back door frame and window suffered fire damage and the house was smoke-logged.

Phil Lancaster, Cleveland Fire Brigade’s director of community protection, said the cause is under investigation.

He urged residents not to keep wheelie bins too close to their homes.

A further strike was set to be held between 10am-3pm on Sunday.
