DOZENS of new jobs will be created after a prominent pub undergoes a £500,000 makeover.

The Travellers Rest, in Stockton Road, Hartlepool, will call last orders for the final time on Sunday when it will be transformed into a Flaming Grill pub.

Owners, the Spirit Pub Company, say 29 new jobs will be created once the pub has been revamped.

The fully refurbished Flaming Grill pub (which specialises in chargrilled food served on sizzling skillets) will have a revamped function and meeting room.

It is due to open its doors to customers on September 2.

New jobs include front of house, chefs and kitchen staff.

General manager David Bone said: “Speaking to the regulars, it is clear that this pub is in need of a refurbishment.

“Everybody is very excited about the changes but we will make sure that it retains the atmosphere of the Travellers Rest.

“We are helping to give a boost to the Hartlepool economy, which is very positive news.

“The new pub will have a team of about 38 people, which will include the current nine-strong team of staff.

“The Spirit Pub Company is spending in excess of £500,000 on this revamp which will see the whole of the exterior and interior redecorated.”

The current licensee at the Travellers Rest, Daniel Mallinson, will be transferring to the new management team.

The pub will be closed for about six weeks over the summer to allow work on the refit to be complete, and for staff training.

Informal recruitment open days have already been held at the pub in May and June and candidates are being interviewed this week.
