Janmaat is in Rafa Benitez’s squad for this afternoon’s must-win game against Aston Villa, having recovered from the groin injury he suffered in last month’s defeat to Southampton.

However, Vurnon Anita is likely to line up at right-back for the relegation-threatened club at Villa Park.

“Janmaat is training well and told me he wants to go back and wants to give something to the team,” said Benitez.

“He knows it’s important for everyone to stay up, and is desperate to help.

“Anita’s making a great effort. He had a problem, but is training. I’m pleased he’s available. He’s an example to the rest of the team.”
